Sonia Roman (77) prepares to return to a new home in Protea Village, a once a thriving community of mostly coloured families whose homes were razed to the ground during one of the darkest periods of South Africa’s history. Sixty years and multiple court cases later, their land is awarded back. Claimants like Sonia, Boy and Nellie, together with their descendants will move to the one of the most affluent suburbs in Cape Town: Bishopscourt.

For Sonia, the new Protea Village is more than just a housing development. It is justice for the grief she has carried every day since she was a child, when her family was displaced from their lush paradise next to Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens to Heideveld, a barren township on the Cape Flats. Having spent a lifetime waiting to return, Sonia and others now navigate the complexity of a single land claim shared between multiple family members and the ever increasing possibility that the high rates and taxes in Bishopscourt will affect whether or not they get to live out their years there.
